2015 has been a huge year for dj-kicks, marking both 20 years of the series as well as our 50th release. but far from slowing down, we’re already looking ahead to another incredible mix from one of our favorite artists. over the past decade, seth troxler has become a visionary and authentic voice in dance music, his jovial personality cutting through the noise and continually playing by his own rules. growing up between detroit and chicago, his musical education carries enviable credentials, with his stepdad a local radio personality who championed the early sounds of house music. true to troxler’s character, the mix has a whimsical nature and a thoughtful and timeless narrative, bearing a tenacious episode for the dj-kicks series that gives a true insight into the man behind the well-preened moustache and cowboy antics.

london-based artist the room below follows 2014’s dba debut (as part of the 015.5 v/a release) with a mixture of classic and experimental house sounds. born in bristol, raised in dorset and residing in the capital, henry keen aka the room below has been djing and collecting vinyl for over 20 years. as soundspecies alongside his brother he was championed by gilles peterson’s worldwide show and london institution cdr. the alias ‘the room below” was coined to coincide with henry’s analogue re-working of close friend paul white’s ‘rapping with’ lp. since then he has maintained this alias for his house and techno composition. they pay homage to the legendary chicago and detroit artists that inspired him back in the 80’s and 90’s.

this month athens of the north presents two 45 s from a true musical genius, weldon irvine. here we have 2 classic sides taken from the 1976 lp sinbad on rca. the vocals don blackman are certainly the equal of marvin gayes whats going on for conscious soul perfection, i don t think i can give it higher praise than that. this is in my top 5 records of all time dont think, buy it.
